Kate Domash
Kate is a London based artist who specialises in colourful landscapes in oils. She has a BA in Art History with a Concentration in Visual Arts from Barnard College, Columbia University. She began painting again after a long hiatus and captures the places with which she is familiar on paper, board, and canvas.
"My work starts with images that catch my eye as I go through my daily life. I take a snapshot for reference, and then work on them back at my studio. When I begin, I have no fixed idea of what the final painting will look like. I work in oil paint, and usually work on card covered with shellac which gives a very smooth, flat surface but sometimes work on aluminium or canvas. I build up the paint slowly in very thin, translucent layers, wiping parts off as I go. I use colour and line to capture the feeling and atmosphere of what I see and sense, using the reference photo only as a starting point. I often turn the paintings upside down to work on them. I’m happy with the result if I feel it conveys a feeling or atmosphere.”
