Hilary Daltry
Hilary Daltry is a London based printmaker whose specialism is woodcut prints. She grew up in Cumbria and studied painting at the Slade School of Fine Art and printmaking at Chelsea School of Art. Awarded the Prix de Rome scholarship and scholarships to Greece and Spain; her Mediterranean-influenced subjects include allegorical figures and still life of fruit and flowers.
Her woodcuts are influenced by the Japanese tradition, as well as the European Renaissance tonal chiaroscuro woodcuts. Drawn from life and hand printed on Japanese paper, one wood block for each colour, creating rich overlays of colour.
“I always experiment- it is always surprising and interesting. Woodcut is a very direct medium. When it is cut the wood itself becomes expressive. The outcome is dictated by the way the tools are used.”
