Graham Chorlton

Graham is a painter inspired by urban imagery and our everyday surroundings, creating artworks that evoke mystery through the use of light, composition and painterly touch. Urban trees stand proud on our streets with a human-like presence and dappled light through leaves dance on pavements.

His paintings are built up with thin layers of acrylic paint, or pigment suspended in a medium. This creates a strong sense of atmosphere, space, light and dark whilst stressing the fact that, as well as the image, we are looking at paint marks on a surface which create that image.

Graham studied painting and history of art at the University of Leeds in the 1970s, and subsequently worked both as an artist and educator ever since. He is currently working from his studio in an old factory in Birmingham, the Telsen Building. His work has been exhibited extensively in both solo and group exhibitions, as well as in private collections. Most recently his work was featured in the Royal Academy Summer Show 2025.
