Nothing says British summertime more than a trip to the seaside. As well as day trips; the sea has always been a source of inspiration for artists and makers alike. Here at SEED we have plenty of gifts and lovely things that you can use to bring a sense of the shoreline into your home this summer.
A quirky kitchen accessory perfect for any fish loving chef or fisherman hungering for the sea when drying up is the Cream Cornwall Mackerel Tea Towel. Printed on 100% cotton, the classic nautical colour theme suits every kitchen and the bold illustration brings that added seaside twist!
To complete the sea-faring kitchen, take a peep through the pages of ‘Polpo’ for some of Venice’s favourite dishes and although not technically the sea, I think we can make exceptions for ‘The Water City’.
Sid Dickens’ range of memory blocks has one for every occasion and this limited edition collection pays tribute to the magic and the mystery of the sea. In particular, the Arms Reach T383 Memory block evokes feelings of deep sea diving and the creatures that may be waiting to be discovered. Other blocks in this range include Curiosity T382 and Masquerade T378.
For the ‘Captain Ahab’ in your life, these Moby Dick inspired cufflinks from Literary Emporium will bring a subtle hint of the sea to any outfit.
If designing a sea themed room or perhaps searching for that nod to the ocean in your décor. Perhaps try a feature wall with this stunning and entirely different wallpaper from Bodie & Frou, available in various colours it is sure to make a statement.
Alice Shields’ playful ceramics make for whimsical gifts. Her charming illustrations will appeal to anyone whose heart has also been captured by the sea.  For those drawn to the life that lives beneath the waves The Life Aquatic mug features creatures of the deep whereas, for those who perhaps haven’t quite found their sea legs yet, the All At Sea mug features all of things you can love about the sea whilst firmly planted on land!
Also see the All At Sea tea towel and the Boat brooch for more of Alice’s charming sea illustrations.
For a more subtle tribute to the sea, Caroline Finlay’s  ‘Tidal’ range is inspired by the ever changing relationship between the sea and the shore with many pieces designed to evoke the sense of the ocean through textures and colours. Dedicated to traditional practices, Finlay’s jewellery is always unique and entirely individual.
Inspiration from the sea can be spotted throughout the UK and its designers. From the delicate jewellery and printed tea towels from makers here at SEED to literary classics and entire cultures taste buds, the sea is an enduring muse. It looks like the sea will shaping not only our shorelines, but our gifts and home design for a very long time.
